Fair by the Numbers

Unity students organizing “Moving Planet” at the 2011 Fair.

As you’ve read, the Common Ground Country Fair keeps us busy!  Unity College has had quite a history of involvement with the Fair on top of our year-round partnerships with MOFGA (the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association). Last year, Unity’s documentary film students, and a host of others, brought 350.org‘s “Moving Planet” action to tens of thousands of Fairgoers, highlighting the role of local agriculture in the response to climate change. See the video here. We’ve staffed Energy & Shelter and Environmental Concerns booths, we’ve led Public Policy Teach-Ins, and we’ve volunteered . . . . a lot!  This year we got a special assignment for recycling and compost outreach and did a whole lot more.

Here’s some of Unity’s 2012 Fair by the numbers:

12 – Unity College volunteers for compost and recycling outreach over the weekend.

2 – pre-Fair setup teams with our Community Based Learning and Student Activities offices.

15 – coveted yellow t-shirts for Unity’s FFA parking volunteers.

40 – high school juniors teamed up with Unity for waste station outreach on Saturday.

3 – morning shifts by the always-dependable Dawn W. at Fair recycling stations.

16 – incredible performers and 1 Public Policy Teach-In under Unity’s banner at the College-sponsored Spotlight Stage.

1 – well fed sustainability coordinator after three full days of Maine’s premier local food celebration.
